Assignment 1

Goh Hock Kee Course Manager of Diploma in Logistics and Operations Management at Temasek Polytechnic.




a) Briefly Describe your job responsibilities as a manager
The long term development of the course, ensure it is successful, and work with the school, staff principal and director

B) What is you management style
Trust the work of the professors because they are teachers by training, trust the epartment's experience and expertise, I rely on initiative in the team. We work hand in hand, we work closely. I prefer to be more hands on instead of just having a helicopter view
(Human resource style)

C) What are some of the difficulties you face as a manager
One difficulty is attracting students to the course. There were some years where we couldn't achieve the target intake. Another challenge is to get the different staff to work together because they each have different styles, I have to find a way to let them work harmoniously and bring a balance. Compromise is not the option, by compromising, no one gains, it is better to let both parties achieve something. Sometimes there are also some trouble students who have difficulty promoting or graduating.

D) How do you overcome these difficulties
I handle it with patience I work closely with staff, support from staff , management, director and students, I also find time to relax and recharge. If we have problems students, I would find out what is the cause of their problems, be it financial or family matters, then have 1 to 1 sessions with them. There have been some cases where nothing works and the students do not graduate, but there are also success stories.

E) In your opinion, what makes a good manager
Leadership, lead in such a way that you get majority support. Must be able to empathise and trust. A good manager is able to communicate with his staff. They should be able to lead, organise and make up for areas of weakness with other skills..
